Korea’s popular webtoon “Acoustic Life” starts its 13th season.
“Acoustic Life” is a slice-of-life Korean webtoon by the author “Nanda.”
Known as a slice-of-life or daily life comic, this story primarily revolves around events and reflections experienced by the author in daily life. In Japan, it is known as essay manga, while in the United States, it’s referred to as autobiographical comics.
Author “Nanda,” a woman in her 40s born in the 1980s, shares her life stories starting from her early married life in 2010. She has a husband of the same age and a 13-year-old daughter.
Coming from a design background, her art style is illustrative, focusing mainly on character portrayals without backgrounds. Yet, she effectively expresses various emotions and atmospheres through subtle details such as eyebrows and mouth shapes.
With a delicate sensibility, she humorously depicts events she has experienced and the emotions she has felt. Particularly, she captures unique emotions and thoughts that others might overlook, revealing how she felt and responded, which has garnered strong support from many readers.
Her husband, “Hangun,” is also an intriguing character, originally a game graphic designer who “Nanda” has portrayed developing indie games in her comics. Known as a gaming enthusiast, Hangun’s avid consumption of games is amusingly illustrated from the perspective of his ordinary wife.
Starting her career as a newlywed in 2010, the author is now a mother raising a sixth-grade daughter. Over the past 15 years, both the author and her readers have grown, experienced setbacks, and matured. Maintaining relationships for more than a decade proves challenging, yet the enduring richness brought by this long-standing slice-of-life Korean webtoon may possibly fulfill a thirst for older relationships unmet in reality.
